Scrooges be gone!

What Is Secret Santa?

Secret Santa '10 is the fifth Secret Santa held on Smack Jeeves, an event where users exchange anonymous gifts, usually in the form of a drawing or a comic. Secret Santa was started by Trebor in 2006, then continued by Charlie in 2007, followed by cutething in 2008, and finally by Imi and Pyroman in 2009. This year avian-reader, xkrazydog and tezzle work hard to ensure Secret Santa '10 is as successful (if not more) than the Secret Santa's in the past.

What was the best part of being involved in the management of Secret Santa 2010?

The first is seeing how many users were interested! We had so many, it made me cry tears of pain and joy at the same time hahah!

Working together with Aids and Avian was a ton of fun too, and watching the posts go up. I love the reactions and the positive feeling everyone spreads for this event. I was especially touched by the gusto and enthusiasm from many of the gift elves to help their fellow users! You guys are wonderful! Much love to you guys!
Some notable gift elves that made me d'aww:
Sonic-ock
Reigan
h0lyhandgrenade
YakkitySax
blankd

thanks for all of your help <3

What was the worst part of being involved in the management of Secret Santa 2010?

Pressure. But I think I got over that thanks to the other head elves as i slowly got use to managing my duties. There was also some users that caused a bit of trouble this year, but we got through it pretty fine. Oh my wrist is kind of stiff too, but that's nothing new.

What role did you play in the management of Secret Santa 2010?

I was assigned to send out PM's, do some illustration work for Aids' template and was in charge of the gift elf management and (now) release. There was also some question answering from strays. I was also a gift elf too (for 3 people =D)!

What was it like working with the other Head Elves?

Great. We got along quite well and I really respect Avian and Aids' hardwork. I think all 4 of us learned alot and had alot of fun, because I know i did.

What was the hardest job, and what was the most tedious task?

Hmm... Mass PM's. and Uploading. I'm not use to the uploading and the codes but it was a learning experience. Also realizing that after Christmas was over D8 i'm still working on it! I'm sorry in advance for any mess ups!

Easiest job?

Actually drawing the Secret santa gifts. (haha... irony xD)

Were there any hurdles that you didn't forsee?

The realization that alot of rules weren't highlighted became a problem when we were sure we covered all the angles. Especially Where users send gifts, labeling, sizing and content!
Some other issues was The PC List. Art theft and a small fraction of immature users.

Would you do it all again next year? If so, is there anything you would do differently?

I would! I'm not sure how strict the tradition of "new users each time" but i'd deffinitely like to oversee it, and offer some tips and especially reinforce the rules. There would be alot of changes needed since our user rate is now very very high.

avian-reader Interview

What was the best part of being involved in the management of Secret Santa 2010?

Not having to draw a gift. I feel much more confident in my admin than in my drawing.

What was the worst part of being involved in the management of Secret Santa 2010?

The responsibility pressure. If you mess up as a santa, you've scrooged one person; if you mess up as a head elf, you've scrooged over a hundred. On that subject, I wish to give my sincere apologies to InvasionEd, aimeexvenom, amymist and BrokenLioness for the delay in their gifts. I went to bed without submitting a set of gifts for the morning, and by the time I did it there had been a two-hour gap.

What role did you play in the management of Secret Santa 2010?

I helped answer queries and send notifications, partnered the Santa's and helped send the recipient PMs, and collected, processed and posted the gifts.

What was it like working with the other Head Elves?

Really good, I think we've made a good team together. We've tried to discuss everything with each other every step of the way, and keep each other up to date with what's going on. Everyone has put in a lot of work, especially Mr Aids, which is ironic considering he was only planning to advise us and code the site (only xD).

What was the hardest job, and what was the most tedious task?

Sending mass PMs, until our wonderful Admin turned off Smack Santa's PM recipient limiter, for which I would like to give him a massive thank you.

Easiest job?

Partnering the Santa's, once I'd learnt how to randomise lists in excel. If you're interested, you type "=RAND()" in a column next to the list, corner-drag it so that you have an equal-sized list of random's next to your list, select both columns, click Data and then Sort, sort by the column with the random list, and hey presto!

Were there any hurdles that you didn't forsee?

The non-mature group. I still can't entirely see the point myself (apart from Mosama's work, no one should be forced to read through that xD You know I love you really!). But it was what people wanted, so...

Would you do it all again next year? If so, is there anything you would do differently?

I'd love to, however like Mr Aids I think it would be good for other people to get a chance to try. The most I see myself doing next year is putting out the call for that year's Head Elves and Gift Elves; like Zordon, but with more hair.

Mr Aids Interview

What was the best part of being involved in the management of Secret Santa 2010?

Seeing the reaction of people with the gifts. Not just necessarily their gifts, but appreciating the effort put into other people's gifts. It's so nice seeing the community really getting together for the event.

What was the worst part of being involved in the management of Secret Santa 2010?

Seeing the amount of scrooges that turned up. I thought there would be more than last year because of more participants, but not as many as there was. Some had genuine reasons for lateness, but the rest of you...sssshhhhaaammmmeeeee.

What role did you play in the management of Secret Santa 2010?

Well I went into the Secret Santa stating I would do the template, and I spent around a week working on it. Having previous template experience made it much less frustrating than it should have been, and Pyroman providing help when I needed it made it easier for me. xKrazydog also helped with the banner, and it really made the site layout so much better. We also went back and forth with what the template should look like, and thanks to her it turned out better than I ever expected it to be.

I also offered to make a list of gift elves and participants to put up on the site, so I handled that as well. I also would add a link to each user's profile with each gift uploaded, and resize the gifts that went over 850px in width.

What was it like working with the other Head Elves?

It was really good, I felt quite lucky to work with such great people. Avian-Reader was really into the Secret Santa, he pretty much organized everything and got really fired up when participants were being really lazy with their gifts. xKrazydog was also great, she helped me out with the template and comic profile and handled the scrooges and grinches really well. Tezzle was always there when we needed him, ready to help us out with whatever we needed.

What was the hardest job, and what was the most tedious task?

The hardest job was the template, I'm not quite skilled enough to have expected for it to work perfectly on my first try. Although the most tedious task was the participants list.

Easiest job?

I found the easiest thing was dealing with users and issues. When Avian needed an opinion I was only too glad to share mine, and it seemed to have helped him out.

Were there any hurdles that you didn't forsee?

Well, I knew before starting the template there would be problems with it, but I didn't forsee what the exact problems would be. There was an issue with space being at the bottom of the footer which I couldn't get rid of due to the baubles at the bottom of the template, and there was also a space between the header and the content of the page that I had trouble getting rid of. But I got there in the end, yay.

Would you do it all again next year? If so, is there anything you would do differently?

I probably wouldn't do it again next year. Not because I didn't enjoy it, but I want to keep the tradition of a new team handling the Secret Santa each year. To anyone reading this, I would highly recommend you consider managing the Secret Santa next year.

But if I were to do things differently, it would probably be that the updates should have been spaced out over a longer period, perhaps over a couple of weeks. I would find myself spending an hour or so each morning having to deal with author comments and resizing gifts, it would have been more ideal to only spend a few minutes each day over the 2 weeks doing the same work. Also the work could have been more evenly distributed than it was, which I would suggest for future organizers to consider.

We, the head elves like to give a big thank you to all of those who participated in this Secret santa event. Starting today you may all reveal yourselves to your lucky receiver, as well as accept our thanks for fulfilling your promises and brought a bit more happiness to a fellow user! We were blessed this year to have the biggest number of participants thus far, and we had a blast running it!

As per tradition, Those who were scrooged will receive a gift from an anonymous Gift elf, notifications to the gift elves will be sent out tomorrow, and the scrooged can expect a substitute gift within the next upcoming week! PM's will be sent out to notify the scrooged to guarantee that their gifts will be seen. Just because Christmas day has passed doesn't mean good will passes with it!

We'd also like to give a thanks in advance to the gift elves for their generous participation. You all make this event one to look forward to every year.
